On June 29, Consul-General of Japan Yasunori Nakayama with his wife, Mrs. Chizuko Nakayama, hosted a conferment ceremony for Prof. David Waterhouse, Professor Emeritus of the University of Toronto’s Department of East Asian Studies, who had been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for his contributions to Japan studies and for promoting understanding of Japanese culture among Canadians. In attendance at the ceremony were representatives from the University of Toronto, the Royal Ontario Museum as well as family, friends, colleagues and former students.
Prof. Waterhouse was Professor of the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto, from 1975 to 2002. He has also been an Honorary Research Associate of the ROM’s Far Eastern Department since 1969. He was awarded his decoration for his academic accomplishments as a leading scholar on ukiyo-e, including the work of Suzuki Harunobu, for his contributions toward spreading appreciation of Japanese aesthetics in Canada, for developing Japanese studies at the University of Toronto and for promoting understanding of Japanese culture through judo.
