On Oct. 22, Consul-General of Japan SASAYAMA Takuya hosted a ceremony to confer the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays, to Mr. Peter Wakayama. Mr. Wakayama was awarded the decoration for his contributions toward promoting Japanese culture in Canada and friendship and goodwill between Japan and Canada.

Mr. Wakayama served as a Director of the Board of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) from 2009 to 2019. Within that time, he was active as the JCCC’s Vice-President for five years from 2009 to 2014.

Mr. Wakayama worked without remuneration to categorize, record, preserve and manage the historical and cultural artifacts which had been housed but left untouched for many years at the JCCC. He contributed through this work to the cultural and historical exhibit now in the Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre, the largest institution in Canada dedicated to the history of Japanese Canadians.

He has also served as Vice-President of Shodo Canada from 2008 to the present. He was responsible for the organization and public relations activities of Shodo Canada’s annual exhibition, contributing to the success of the event which to date has been held 11 times.
