On Sept. 23, Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito visited the Municipality of Clarington in Durham Region, and gave a presentation on Japan-Canada relations at the local Town Hall. In attendance were approximately 40 people, including His Worship Mayor Adrian Foster of Clarington and Town Council Members. Consul-General Ito also took the opportunity to exchange views with Federal Member of Parliament Kim Rudd and Ontario Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities David Piccini. She also met with the delegation members who attended the Newcastle Summit last year that took place in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. (The Summit invited representatives from communities named Newcastle around the world, including the region of Newcastle in Clarington. Shinshiro means “new castle” in Japanese.) Consul-General Ito also planted a commemorative Japanese maple tree at the Newcastle Community Hall.
