On Sept. 12, a Foreign Minister’s Commendation for 2019 was conferred to Toronto’s traditional Japanese music ensemble Nagata Shachu during a special ceremony at the official residence of the Consul-General of Japan. Nagata Shachu has spread the appeal of Japanese musical culture in  Canada at various events, including those on major occasions such as the 90th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations, through performances of both classic and original pieces using Japanese instruments.  Just having celebrated their own 20th anniversary last year, Nagata Shachu also actively undertakes school visits, other outreach activities and development of future performers. Such contributions toward mutual understanding and goodwill between Japan and Canada resulted in this Commendation.
