Mr. Soichiro Yamamoto (second from left), who was decorated with the Order of the Rising Sun,
Silver Rays, with his wife, Ms. Junko Yamamoto (second from right), along with Consul-General of
Japan Takako Ito (left) and her husband, Mr. Claude Ito.
On Aug. 20, Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito held a special ceremony at her official residence to confer the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays, to Mr. Soichiro Yamamoto in recognition of his contributions toward the welfare of local Japanese nationals and the strengthening of friendship between Japan and Canada. In attendance were representatives of the Shinkikai (Association of Japanese Canadian Businesses and Professionals) and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, along with Mr. Yamamoto’s friends.
Mr. Yamamoto took part in the establishment of the Shinkikai in order to improve the local business environment for Japanese immigrants. He contributed toward the operation of this organization for 11 years, including those in which he served as its President. Thanks to his efforts, a business environment developed in Canada in which Japanese immigrants were able to operate smoothly. Thus, he contributed greatly toward the development of Japanese Canadian businesses in Toronto.
He also established the Yamamoto Foundation, engaging in various overseas philanthropic activities. As well, Mr. Yamamoto has made numerous contributions to Japanese Canadian charitable organizations and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre toward the betterment of the Japanese and Japanese Canadian community in Toronto. After the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, he raised funds in the City of Markham toward relief efforts aiding the victims of the disaster.
This decoration was in recognition of such invaluable work. We at the Consulate-General of Japan extend our heartfelt congratulations.
