On Feb. 7, a presentation entitled “Accepting Foreign Workers: Japan's New Policy” was held by the Centre for the Study of Global Japan at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy as an instalment of the JAPAN NOW Lecture Series. The presenter was Mr. Hidenori Sakanaka, Director of the Japan Immigration Policy Research Institute and former Bureau Chief of the Tokyo Immigration Bureau. His presentation examined how Japan can deal with the labour shortage resulting from its aging population and declining birth rate, as well as Japan’s policies regarding accepting foreign workers and integrating them into society.

Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito in her opening remarks gave an overview on the current situation in Japan
and the country’s initiatives such as Womenomics and hiring seniors.

Mr. Sakanaka advocated for “Japanese-style” acceptance of foreign workers.

The room was filled to capacity.

A lively Q&A followed the presentation.
