Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito gives remarks at the opening of the exhibit
Obsession: Sir William Van Horne’s Japanese Ceramics at the Gardiner Museum.
On Oct. 19, the opening ceremony was held for the exhibition Obsession: Sir William Van Horne’s Japanese Ceramics at the Gardiner Museum. This exhibit showcases the Japanese ceramics collection by Sir William Van Horne who headed the construction of the transcontinental railroad in Canada at the end of the 19th century. The exhibition also draws attention to a vital aspect of the exchange through art between Japan and Canada, and between Asia and the West. Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito gave remarks extending congratulations on the opening, at the same time touching upon the rich history of Japanese ceramics, which began in the Jomon Period (circa 14,000 to 300 BC), and the beauty of the everyday objects which enchanted Mr. Van Horne. The exhibition will continue to Jan. 20, 2019.

Consul-General Ito receives an explanation from Dr. Sequoia Miller,
the museum’s Chief Curator.
