Japan Film Night Celebrates Japanese Cinema at the Toronto International Film Festival

On the occasion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF, held from Sept. 6 through 16), Japan Film Night was hosted by UNIJAPAN and The Japan Foundation, Toronto. Japanese filmmakers whose works were on this year’s TIFF roster were invited along with other stakeholders. This year, the nine Japanese films at the Festival are:

  • Killing directed by Mr. Shinya Tsukamoto
  • Shoplifters by Mr. Hirokazu Kore-eda
  • Vision by Ms. Naomi Kawase
  • Aiko I & II by Ryusuke Hamaguchi
  • Complicity by Mr. Kei Chikaura
  • Legend of the Demon Cat - Director's Cut by Chen Kaige (Japan, China Co-Production)

<Short Films>
  • 1986 Summer by Mr. Toshio Matsumoto
  • Reneepoptosis by Renee Zhan (Japan, USA Co-Production)
  • The Air of the Earth in Your Lungs by Ross Meckfessel (Japan, USA Co-Production)

In attendance at this year’s Japan Film Night were Mr. Tsukamoto, Mr. Hamaguchi and Mr. Chikaura. Japanese sake was served at the reception, with a hope for successful screenings of the Japanese films at this year’s TIFF.
