JAPAN NOW Lecture Series: Osaka University Professor Emeritus Yasuhide Nakamura Presents on “Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook – Born in Japan, Flourishing around the World”

a Japanese initiative, by Osaka University Professor Emeritus Yasuhide Nakamura.
On Nov. 2, the second instalment of the JAPAN NOW Lecture series for the current academic year featured Osaka University Professor Emeritus and Konan Women’s University Professor Yasuhide Nakamura. Dr. Nakamura’s presentation was on the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, a Japanese initiative dating back to 1948 which today is being used in Indonesia and other developing countries thanks to the Dr. Nakamura’s efforts via JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). One of Dr. Nakamura’s former students, University of Toronto Assistant Professor Shafi Bhuiyan also presented on how the Handbook is being used in his home country of Bangladesh, and on the effectiveness of its content being tailored to meet specific needs of the country where it is being used.

Dr. Louis Pauly, Interim Director of the University of Toronto’s Centre for the Study of Global Japan, gave opening remarks.

Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito gave remarks, which included her own experiences using the MCH Handbook as a mother.

Dr. Nakamura spoke of his first-hand experiences, and showed attendants the various versions of the Handbook being used in different countries.

University of Toronto Assistant Professor Shafi Bhuiyan chaired the event.

Attendants continued to discuss the topic with Dr. Nakamura even after the session.
