On Sept. 11, the Japan Foundation, Toronto along with UNIJAPAN and the Okinawa Film Office co-hosted Japan Film Night, an annual event showcasing the film makers whose works are being screened during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Japanese films being screened at TIFF this year were: The Third Murder by Mr. Hirokazu Kore-eda; Oh Lucy! by Ms. Atsuko Hirayanagi; Vampire Clay by Mr. Soîchi Umezawa; Radiance by Ms. Naomi Kawase and Signature by Mr. Kei Chikaura. Mr. Kore-eda and Ms. Hirayanai were in attendance at Japan Film Night.

Also in attendance was Consul-General of Japan Yasunori Nakayama, who said in his remarks that Japanese films “act as windows to Japanese society, enabling them to see how the Japanese think – their aesthetics, values and emotions – in their daily lives.” He said he hoped TIFF will continue to draw quality Japanese films which deepen the world’s understanding of Japan.
