Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Toronto's 63rd Anniversary Flower Show

2026/6/9

On June 7, the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Toronto held its 63rd Anniversary Flower Show at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Ikenobo, the oldest and largest school of ikebana with a history of over 560 years, encompasses three distinct styles: Rikka, established during the Muromachi period to express the landscape of nature; Shoka, established during the Edo period to express the way plants take root and live; and Freestyle, which freely expresses the beauty of plants without being bound by form.

The Society has held its flower show every year since 1963. Under the leadership of President Ichimori Yuko, its teachers, students, and volunteers continue to showcase the aesthetics of Ikenobo in Canada.

In his opening remarks, Consul-General Matsunaga introduced the history and philosophy of Ikenobo, citing the words of Ms.Ikenobo Senko, the heir apparent to the headship of the school, who states that "ikebana is an expression of life itself." He highlighted Ikenobo's aesthetic of cherishing the "beauty of empty space" and the "beauty of scarcity," and noted that in today's era of rapidly advancing technologies, ikebana offers a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with nature, return to one's true self, and refresh both mind and body.
