On January 18, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre held its annual New Year celebration, featuring New Year-themed activities such as mochi pounding, shishimai(lion dance), kakizome (first calligraphy of the year), taiko drumming, dance performances, and koto music. Many visitors, including numerous children, enjoyed the festive New Year atmosphere. An area showcasing the various home prefectures, organized by the respective prefectural associations, was also very popular. In his opening remarks, Consul-General Matsunaga said that by celebrating the start of the year we can invite good fortune, and he expressed his hope that it will be a year blessed with luck. A summary of Consul-General’s remarks is available here.
