Consul-General Sasayama confers the Foreign Minister’s
Commendation to Ms. Maeda
In a special ceremony on Jan. 18 at his official residence, the Consul-General of Japan in Toronto, Mr. SASAYAMA Takuya, conferred the Foreign Minister’s Commendation of the Government of Japan to Ms. MAEDA Noriko, a contemporary calligraphy artist residing in Waterloo. The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
Ms. Maeda founded Shodo Canada in 2008 and since then has overseen the non-profit organization’s Annual Japanese Calligraphy Competition in Canada, which provides those practising calligraphy in this country with an opportunity develop and present their work. She is also active in promoting calligraphy among the public through her courses and workshops and is instrumental in supporting the growth and development of this invaluable Japanese tradition in Canada.
