On June 24, at a special ceremony at his official residence, Consul-General of Japan SASAYAMA Takuya presented OTA Norio, York University Associate Professor (Teaching) in the Department of Languages, Literatures & Linguistics, with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Rays, for his contribution toward the promotion of the Japanese language.

In addition to elevating the status of Japanese language courses at York University, Prof. Ota devoted immense effort toward improving the online Japanese language learning environment. He also contributed greatly to the promotion of Japanese in Canada through his long-term involvement with Japanese speech contests and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

Prof. Ota has also trained teachers of the Japanese language using online resources at foreign universities, has launched interdisciplinary courses in which students can learn cross-cultural communication through Japanese taught through local boards of education, and provided guidance in cross-cultural communications at Japan-Canada joint venture businesses. Through such activities, he contributed greatly to the promotion of greater understanding of Japan and to Japan-Canada relations.
