On Nov. 29, the Consul-General's Commendation was awarded to Japanese chef Mr. HASHIMOTO Masaki, who earned a Michelin Star in the inaugural edition of the Michelin Guide Toronto announced in September this year.
Of the 13 restaurants that were awarded Michelin Stars in the 2022 Toronto Michelin Guide, five of them were Japanese restaurants, representing a remarkable achievement that provokes new interest in Japanese cuisine and demonstrates its strong presence in Canada. This conferment ceremony was organized as an addendum to the previous conferment held on Nov. 17 for the four other chefs of Japanese cuisine who earned Michelin Stars (Mr. NAKAGAWA Ryusuke, Mr. Jackie Lin, Mr. IZUTSU Daisuke, and Mr. SAITO Masaki).
Mr. HASHIMOTO Masaki opened a Japanese catering business in Mississauga over 30 years ago, and since then has operated a restaurant that provides authentic kaiseki cuisine using Japanese ingredients at the JCCC (Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre). The JCCC is a centre for disseminating Japanese culture, and endeavours to communicate the cultural aspects of Japanese cuisine and its traditional flavors to visitors.
