On May 8, Consul-General of Japan Yasunori Nakayama paid a courtesy call on Toronto Mayor John Tory, and exchanged views on the railway construction plans currently being undertaken by the City of Toronto.
The Consul-General provided information on the highly developed rail technology of Japan which takes pride in its highly efficient modes of transportation. He also gave examples of Japan’s railway technology spreading overseas, such as the use of Japanese-manufactured cars in Toronto’s Union-Pearson Express due to begin operation next month. Mayor Tory gave an overview of the City of Toronto’s current efforts being devoted to subways and railway development. He also expressed hope for future collaboration with Japan in this field.
They were joined by Councillor Josh Colle, Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission, as well as Councillor Michael Thompson, Chair of Toronto's Economic Development and Culture Committee. A lively exchange of opinions ensued on how to proceed in developing cooperation between Japan and Toronto in the field of urban rail.
