Japanese Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Visits University of Toronto

On March 19, as part of Japan’s efforts to develop exchange and diplomacy in the field of science, the Consulate General of Japan co-hosted with the University of Toronto’s Department of Chemistry a lecture by Dr. Akira Suzuki, Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University and 2010 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. The lecture was entitled “Cross-Coupling Reactions of Organoboranes: An Easy Way for Carbon-Carbon Bonding” referring to Dr. Suzuki’s discovery which can be applied in a wide variety of fields such as pharmaceuticals, agro-chemicals and electronics. Consul General of Japan Eiji Yamamoto extended a few welcoming remarks before the lecture and gave an overview of Japan-Canada science and technology cooperation and its potential. The audience was made up of 160 representatives from the scientific community, medicine, industry and media.
