East Asia Comes to Waterloo's Renison University College
The Annual East Asian Festival was held at Renison University College on Sept. 24, and was met with tremendous attendance. This festival has been held each year since 1995, and is comprised of events relating to Japan, China and Korea. The Consulate-General of Japan also participated in this valuable gathering of people interested in East Asia, providing various attractions and lending materials such as lanterns, festive happi jackets, traditional Japanese toys and dolls. The atmosphere of “wa” (harmony) was very prevalent as a result.
Information booth on Japan.
The Consulate-General of Japan’s information booth provided pamphlets and provided various types of information on Japan, including that which promoted tourism at a time when the country was still recovering from the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake of this past March.
Trying on kimono
The Consulate-General of Japan also enlisted the assistance of the Toronto Kimono Club to allow visitors to try on traditional Japanese clothing. This was well received by those who were attracted by the beautiful designs on the garments.
Concert by the traditional music group Ten Ten.
The Consulate-General also invited the local traditional folk music group Ten Ten, which, with their performance of various pieces, drew the interest of many people who normally do not have the opportunity to hear Japanese folk music.
