Japanese Canadian Communities Celebrate the New Year

Shishi Dance

With the arrival of the New Year, various Japanese Canadian communities in the Greater Toronto Area held their own celebrations.  In Hamilton the Halton+Japan Community held its Japanese New Year’s Event on January 12, while the Toronto New Japanese Canadian Association and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre co-hosted the Oshogatsu-kai on January 26.  Each event was attended by about 500 people who enjoyed traditional Japanese culture.

The Consulate General of Japan provided the utensils to make mochi (rice cakes), as well as shishi dance costumes and a portable shrine to parade.
