The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, was presented to Her Worship Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga, at a special ceremony on June 9 at at the official residence of the Consul General of Japan in Toronto. Consul General Eiji Yamamoto presided over the ceremony with Mississauga City Councillors in attendance along with the Mississauga Friendship Association, which oversees the City’s twin relations with Kariya, Japan, as well as representatives of Japanese businesses located in Mississauga.
Panasonic Canada President Michael Moskowitz also gave a speech extending his congratulations, while City of Mississauga Councillor Ron Starr led those in attendance in a toast in honour of the Mayor.
Mayor McCallion was conferred this decoration on April 24 for her contributions to Japan-Canada relations through her welcoming support of Japanese businesses in Mississauga, which presently number approximately 80. It also recognizes her invaluable participation in the sister-city initiative between Mississauga and Kariy during her 36 years as Mayor.
