On June 19, students at Malvern Collegiate Institute organized an evening dedicated to raising funds for educational benefits for children in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011.
Kizuna Night was a direct result of the KIZUNA Project, by which 20 Malvern students this past March visited the disaster-affected areas to learn about the region’s reconstruction. Subsequently, students from Seiwa Gakuen high school of Sendai, Japan, visited Toronto and were hosted by Malvern Collegiate Institute. The fundraiser came as Canadian students were inspired to maintain the bonds of friendship that resulted from the exchange.
About $4000 was raised from the evening of performances, demonstrations, silent auctions, presentations and food for the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. The current focus of the Fund is to provide long term educational benefits for children in the disaster-affected areas.
