Pre-Departure Orientation Commences for
27th Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme
Orientation session in the Consulate-General of Japan's Sakura Room
The Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto commenced the Pre-Departure Orientation for new Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme participants on May 23. The sessions presented an overview of the programme, as well as procedures related to travel to Japan. The lively question and answer session made apparent the enthusiasm of the new participants.
Most of the these participants will be departing for Japan on August 3, and our Consulate-General plans to hold orientations before then dealing with language, teaching English as a second language, Japanese lifestyles and the society of culture of Japan.
The JET Programme is a Japanese Government exchange programme which centres on inviting English-speaking youths from 40 countries around the world to Japan for a one-year contract (renewable) to teach English in public intermediate and high schools, as well as to take part in other regional internationalization activities.
About 60 to 70 participants depart each year from Toronto, ranking the city the fifth or sixth in the world (depending on the year) in the number of JET participants it produces. This year once again, approximately 60 new participants who will have undergone a rigorous orientation process will embark on their journey to Japan.
