Japan Day at University of Toronto
Many students and general public participated in the Japan Day hosted by the University of Toronto, St. George Campus’s East Asian Institute on November 16th, 2012. The Consulate supported the event by lending out Happi, (traditional straight sleeved coats), Japanese dolls and Kimono (traditional clothing) including Uchikake (bridal robe) that were displayed. This was a great opportunity to share Japan related information on tourism in Japan and the JET Programme (Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme) to people keenly interested in Japan.

Japanese culture display by one of the students |
On Japan Day, third year students presented their research projects that examined contemporary Japanese culture and customs. These were grouped into themes such as Kawaii (cute) culture, fashion sense, Onsen (hot spring) culture and various aspects of traditional Japanese customs. Some students were able to do research by asking their friends in Japan and reported their results in fluent Japanese.

There was also a chance to sample some Japanese food such as Takoyaki, Edamame, Youkan and green tea. The Takoyaki they made on site was a great success.
