The Consulate - General of Japan's Japan Information Centre is proud to be part of this year's Fortune Cooking Food Festival at Harboufront Centre, a celebration of Pan-Asian cuisine and its influence across the globe that takes plaes August 12 through 14.
Chef Matthew Kimura
Among the highlights of this year's Festival will be a cooking demonstration on Saturday, August 13, featuring Chef Matthew Kimura and his Japanese cold noodles. Matthew’s passion for food has always been a life long interest. Growing up helping out in Ginko, the family restaurant operated by his father, working with food became second nature. He currently works for the CBC in web food photography and as a food consultant for Best Recipes Ever. He also freelances as a recipe developer, food stylist and culinary media specialist while working closely with his father, Chef Shigeo Kimura, at Ginko. The demonstration will take place in the Brigantine Room starting at 8 pm. .
The Japan Information Centre will also be manning a booth on the festival grounds, and distributing materials promoting various things Japanese - especially tourism to the country. Due to reportage among the media of the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, many people worldwide received the impression that travel to Japan is now too dangerous, even though much of the country was never directly affected.
The media coverage resulted in Japan receiving a great deal of generous support and aid from around the world. However, Japan now faces a new challange: to send the message to the world that it is a safe and vibrant place to visit. The Japan Information Centre's participation in the Fortune Food Cooking Festival is a part of its efforts to promote a more postive and accurate image of Japan.
Mikoshi parade at a Japanese festival
Periodically throughout the weekend, there also will be traditional carrying of mikoshi (portable shrine), an auspicious practice to bring good fortune that is part of many seasonal festivals in Japan.
