Consul General Yamamoto Meets with New University of Toronto President
Consul General of Japan Eiji Yamamoto with
University of Toronto President Meric Gertler
Consul General of Japan Eiji Yamamoto visited the University of Toronto on January 24, and met with Dr. Meric Gertler, who recently assumed the position of the university's 16th President. Dr. Gertler, formerly the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science whose academic work focuses on the economies of cities, the urban foundations of innovation and the role of creativity, culture and diversity in urban life, was officially installed in his office in a formal ceremony on November 7.
Consul General Yamamoto congratulated Dr. Gertler on his new position, and suggested that this was a good time to explore the possibility of expanding the U of T’s relationships with various Japanese universities. The Consul General said Japanese education institutions were presently very serious about increasing interaction with the international community.
Dr. Gertler replied that the U of T indeed was interested in strengthening ties with universities in Japan with which it already enjoyed fruitful partnerships, including the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Keio University and others. Expansion and further development may include joint degree programs as well as research exchanges. Both Consul General Yamamoto and President Gertler expressed hope that they will be able to work together toward this end.
