Consul-General Recounts Lessons Learned from Earthquake
to Disaster Management Professionals
Consul-General Eiji Yamamoto gave a presentation on March 25 entitled “Lessons and Insights Gained from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami” at the Provincial Emergency Management Conference organized by the Canadian Red Cross’s Ontario chapter.
About 350 emergency management professionals from the provincial and municipal levels attended the presentation. The Consul-General related to them the series of activities that occurred on March 11, 2011, in response to the earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear accident. He also discussed structural measures that were in place such as the construction of breakwater, and the thorough emergency warning system which allowed for the stoppage of all bullet trains with no casualties.
He also explained proper uses of the hazard maps, as well as lessons learned from real examples of unstructured measures that were in place and other areas that needed improvement.
