Manga, Japanese graphic novels, have enjoyed explosive international popularity in recent years, to the point where non-Japanese artists around the world are fashioning their visual narratives in the same style. In recognition of this global trend, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been sponsoring an International MANGA Award since 2007, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs participating in the Committee and a renowned Japanese manga artist, as arranged by the Japan Cartoonists Association, taking part in the selection process. This year, a total of 140 entries competed forthe 14 awards: one gold, three silver and 10 bronze prizes.
