Monbukagakusho Scholarship Application Information
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho a.k.a. MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities. http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0307e.html
The Association of International Education, Japan, the Japan Scholarship Foundation, the Center for Domestic and Foreign Students, the International Students Institute, and the Kansai International Students Institute have united to establish the Japan Student Services Organization. 2012 RESEARCH STUDIES
Application period is now CLOSED.
Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1977 (for the 2012 Program). The term of this scholarship for research (non-degree) students is 2 years beginning in April 2012 or 18 months beginning in October 2012. For master’s or doctorate students, the term of this scholarship is the period needed to complete degree requirements. Six months of Japanese language studies is included in either case. Applicants must be university graduates. The study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied, or a related field.

All forms must be completed and submitted to the Embassy of Japan or the appropriate Consulate General of Japan by the deadline (see the links at the bottom of the section).

Research Studies Scholarship Programme
Late March – mid-May: Recruitment for Research Studies (RS)
Early June: First screening (Part 1) (Application documents reviewed at Embassy)
Late June – July: First screening (Part 2) (selected candidates must attend examinations and interviews at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in Canada)
July - August: Contact with Japanese universities (for those applicants who pass the first screening process-it is best to start this process as soon as possible)
Early September: Application documents forwarded from Canada to MEXT in Tokyo
October: Second screening done by MEXT
Late December – January: Conditional acceptance notification
Following February – March: Notification of official acceptance to successful candidates
Late March: Pre-arrival immigration procedures
Following April: Arrival in Japan
2012 UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
Application period is now CLOSED.
Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1990 and April 1, 1995 (for the 2012 Program). A five-year scholarship is offered (first year is language training) beginning in April 2012. For those majoring in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or a six-year course in pharmacy, the term of the scholarship is seven years.

2011 JAPANESE STUDIES
Application period is now CLOSED.
Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1981 and April 1, 1993 (for the 2011 scholarship year). The term of this scholarship is approximately one year, beginning in October, 2011. Those wishing to pursue an intensive study of the Japanese language and an introduction to Japanese Studies must be an undergraduate student at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in fields related to the Japanese language or culture. Applicants must have sufficient Japanese language ability in order to study at a Japanese university where the language of instruction is Japanese.The allowance in 2009 was 125,000 yen per month (this may be subject to change in 2011).
