Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito hosted the annual National Day Reception at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre

On Nov. 24, Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito hosted the annual National Day Reception at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. A celebratory message was sent by the Hon. Kathleen Wynne, the Premier of Ontario.  More than 400 guests attended the reception, including the Hon. Victor Oh, Senator of Canada, Her Worship Bonnie Crombie, Mayor of Mississauga, and other representatives from the provincial and municipal governments, the business community, the fields of academics, arts and culture as well as the Japanese Canadian community and its organizations. There were performances by Toronto’s celebrated taiko group Nagata Shachu, as well as Chikushi Koto School Grandmaster Linda Caplan. Guests took part in a ceremonial sake barrel opening (Kagamibiraki), and a projected slide show gave an overview of the activities of the Consulate-General of Japan in 2017. Consul-General Ito in addition to recalling the past year in her speech, stated that 2018 will mark the 90th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations. She said she would like to use the opportunity to: introduce more Japanese culture to Canadians; assist in increasing tourism to Japan; support local Japanese business activities; as well as promote Japanese food and saké, thereby strengthening Japan-Ontario relations in a variety of facets.
